Some time ago, I came across three men fishing from a dock at a lake not far from Berlin. One of them had a face that spoke to me and I got to take his photo. He told me that he spent over 45 years in the German equivalent of the Merchant Marines and thoroughly enjoyed what he did. Now in retirement for the past 11 years, his only regret is that he never had a chance to marry. So, no wife, no children and no family. Then his sad expression became a smile and he turned to his two friends and said, “But these guys are my family.”
They demonstratively clinked their beer bottles and took a big swig.
