Emal
Emal (pronounced eh-mal) Wahidi's father was the Minister of the Interior of Afghanistan when the Soviet Union attacked the country in the late 1970's. After being jailed by the Soviets and then put under house arrest, Emal's father found a way to get his family first to India and then to Berlin. So Emal arrived in Germany as a child, has grown up here, attended the university, and has a degree in engineering. He currently works as a technician for a company that does surveying.
I've written about Nuri who runs a small café near our apartment.(You can find him on page 4 of my website.) Nuri and Emal have been friends for a long time, but now Emal has become his partner in the newly expanded Café Frances. He still holds his engineering job but is at the café on Saturdays - a very intelligent and friendly man, who makes a visit to this unusual gathering place even more interesting.
