The Cleaning Lady
I met this woman in front of a local supermarket (a favorite spot for finding interesting faces). She told me that she came to Berlin in 1938 with her parents, who immigrated from Rumania. When she was 16, she married a German and had a child but the marriage didn't last and her son died in a car accident when he was 43. She has worked all her life as a cleaning lady in various hotels in the city. She is retired now and will turn 90 next year.
