When I was a boy, growing up in Baltimore, I have strong recollections of organ grinders, usually accompanied by monkeys in similar costumes, playing in the streets of the city. Those memories have long since faded away, only to be revived when we moved to Berlin. The organ grinder tradition (minus monkeys) still survives here, but I was nevertheless surprised when I recently stumbled onto an organ grinder convention on the square next to the memorial church. There were hundreds of them from all over Germany, playing everything from the usual organ grinder music to pop, and jazz. This man and his three companions were actually playing classical chamber music!
I was able to get a photo, but he had no time for an interview.
